One Spirit Ranch
A Boutique Breeder of fine Spanish-Portuguese and Azteca Horses
One Spirit Ranch came about in 1999 when we purchased an Azteca B (3/4 Andalusian, ¼ AQHA) stallion named SRO Brioso “Brio.” Gradually, we built a fine collection of AQHA mares to cross with Brio, and for six years successfully raised a number of fine colts and fillies who went to new homes in California, Canada, and even the United Kingdom. Handled extensively from birth in combination with quality bloodlines, these horses have been enjoyed by their new owners around the world.
Our Focus: Purebred Andalusians / Lusitanos
In 2003, we determined that Brio was incapable of breeding to outside mares, and so we made a decision to shift gears, heading toward more of a purebred Spanish-Portuguese focus. Growing up riding primarily quarter horses, we stumbled into the Andalusian breed quite accidentally. After working with Brio and meeting many Spanish-Portuguese horses and owners we decided there was no going back. These horses are not only spectacularly beautiful, but their kind temperaments and trainability along with smooth gates will win anyone over. And so, Brio was gelded, and still lives here at OSR. We set out to find a special purebred colt to serve as our new stallion. We also wanted to add the dilute gene to the mix to breed foals with beautiful colors along with wonderful minds and bloodlines.
Our Buckskin Lusitano Stallion
In Spring 2004, Soloro came to live on One Spirit Ranch. Born in 2003, Soloro is a purebred buckskin Lusitano stallion. His sire, Saphiro, is a reknowned cremello stallion imported from Germany. See more about Soloro.
In 2006, Soloro’s first three foals were born – all to AQHA foundation mares. The results are much better than we ever expected. One silvery dun colt, a bay colt, and a palomino filly – all with wonderful conformation, and minds to match their fabulous color. In 2006, we also purchased a pure Spanish-Portuguese black mare named Noche Baronessa who has phenomenal extension and suspension. We are greatly anticipating a foal resulting from this combination in Spring of 2007. This will be OSR’s first purebred foal. In the meantime, we are paring back on our AQHA mares. It’s difficult to do because the resulting foals have been phenomenal, but we breed for quality and want to handle each foal appropriately so focusing is critical. We will still have a few quality Aztecas, but will increasingly focus on purebreds over time.
